Royal Mint Unveils Cutting-Edge Green Energy Centre in Wales
Infinite Renewables has just launched a high-tech Energy Centre at The Royal Mint in Wales, marking a big step forward for clean energy in the UK. The official reveal takes place on Wednesday, 19th July 2023, featuring top experts from GS Yuasa Battery Europe, EWT Wind, Evo Energy Solar, and The Royal Mint itself. Infinite’s Director, Iestyn Morgan, will give the inside scoop on the build.
Multi-Tech Marvel Powers The Mint
The Energy Centre packs a punch with a 2MW solar farm, two powerful ‘Daffodil’ wind turbines, a hydrogen-ready combined heat and power (CHP) gas engine, and a unique dual-chemistry battery storage system. The 2MW solar array was installed by Evo Energy, while AB Energy UK supplied a market-leading CHP engine boasting 44.1% efficiency.
The standout is the hybrid battery system, blending lead-acid and lithium-ion tech. Developed with GS Yuasa, the University of sheffield/" title="Sheffield" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Sheffield, and Infinite, this containerized system combines lithium’s quick response with lead-acid’s stamina to deliver cost-effective, sustainable energy storage.
Wind Power ‘Daffodils’ Fuel The Future
- Infinite designed and built the 850kW Vestas ‘Daffodil’ turbines exclusively to power the Mint.
- One turbine sits on-site; a second nearby turbine feeds into the Mint’s Energy Centre.
- Plans are underway to expand this renewable microgrid to nearby businesses, spreading clean energy around the industrial community.
Leaders Praise Project as a Blueprint for Low-Carbon Future
Andrew Crossman, Director at Infinite, said, “We are extremely proud to have delivered the Royal Mint Energy Centre on budget and on time. This low carbon project is a trailblazer for multi-technology generation within industrial communities — a blueprint for commercial and domestic sustainable energy, offering protection against market volatility and securing energy for the future.”
Inga Doak, Head of Sustainability at The Royal Mint, added, “Sustainability is front and centre at The Royal Mint, and this project is another giant leap toward our Net Zero 2050 goal.”
The Energy Centre is part of the Generation Storage Supply project, backed by the European Regional Development Fund via Welsh Government and Albion Community Power.
