Isle of Wight Crematorium Opens Its Doors for Public Open Day
The Isle of Wight Crematorium in Whippingham is ditching the usual hush for a lively open day this Saturday, 18 August, from 10am to 4pm. It’s your chance to step inside and explore, no gloom attached.
What’s On Offer?
- Check out funeral carriages, directors, and headstone memorial displays.
- Enjoy live tunes from the Wight Diamond Marching Band and Wight Harmony.
- Meet the Friends of 1 Cemetery to see how they transformed the grounds into an award-winning Green Flag conservation area.
- Learn about Ryde’s history with the Ryde Social Heritage Group.
Breaking the Silence on Cremation
“We want to welcome the public for a relaxed, informal day with no restrictions,” said Iain Donald, council bereavement services manager. “People usually visit only when grieving, so this event is all about dispelling myths and easing worries about the cremation and burial process.”
Fundraising and Memorial Service
The hospice charity The Earl Mountbatten Hospice in Newport will benefit from fundraising efforts during the event. The day wraps up with a heartfelt memorial service at 3pm in the crematorium chapel, led by celebrants Caroline Ash and Jonathan Skeet.
