Helicopter Crash Horror: Operator Slams Pilot Error Claims After Shanklin Tragedy
Deadly Helicopter Crash Kills Three
A Robinson R44 helicopter plunged to the ground near Shanklin during a flying lesson on Monday morning (25 August), claiming three lives. On board were experienced flight instructor Simon Hewitt, 54, from Barton-upon-Humber, and passengers Justyna Czoska, 52, and Wojciech “Wojtek” Kowalkowski, 49, from Banbury, Oxfordshire. All three died at the scene. A fourth man in his 30s remains in hospital, stable but seriously injured.
Manufacturer Blames Pilot Error
Robinson Helicopter Company boss David Smith hinted pilot error could be to blame, pointing out that over 80% of similar crashes worldwide end up blamed on pilot mistakes rather than mechanical faults. He said:
“We have full confidence in the authorities who are investigating this incident. They will thoroughly examine all factors, including the aircraft’s maintenance history, the operator, the pilot’s actions, and the environmental conditions leading up to the crash.”
Flight Operator Hits Back: “Premature and Insensitive”
The operator, Northumbria Helicopters, slammed the manufacturer’s comments as “premature and deeply insensitive.” They warned it was too soon to speculate:
“The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has only just started its inquiry. Suggesting pilot error now isn’t supported by evidence and adds to the pain of grieving families and friends. Simon Hewitt was a highly skilled, safety-conscious pilot and instructor. Implying fault before facts are known is not only inaccurate but cruel.”
Families Mourn Beloved Victims
Tributes poured in from loved ones. Hewitt’s family described him as “the most wonderful, intelligent, kind man and father.” Ms Czoska’s daughters called her “our best friend,” while Mr Kowalkowski’s relatives said the father-of-two would be “deeply missed.”
Wreckage Cleared as Inquiry Looms
Drone footage on Tuesday showed recovery crews lifting the wreckage from a hedge. The AAIB confirmed its investigation could stretch up to 12 months.
