Isle of Wight Drivers Brace for Weeks of Traffic Chaos as Temporary Lights Hit Newport’s Busiest Roads

Isle of Wight motorists face weeks of gridlock as transport chiefs install temporary traffic lights on two of Newport’s busiest routes. The nightmare kicks off just as schools return after the Easter break, sparking fears of major delays on Staplers Road and Fairlee Road.

Five Weeks of Delays on Newport’s Main Roads

Traffic warnings are already up, with yellow signs on Staplers Road warning drivers to expect hold-ups for up to five weeks. Southern Gas Networks (SGN) are replacing 115 metres of old steel pipework with safer, modern pipes and renewing 14 gas services to nearby homes.

Meanwhile, Fairlee Road is also undergoing maintenance, adding to the chaos. Temporary two-way and three-way lights will plague peaks near the Staplers junctions with Furrlongs and Mayfield Drive.

Drivers Seek Alternative Routes, But Chaos Looms

Many drivers will try to dodge the traffic by taking Pan Estate’s notorious speed humps. But bus passengers are warned that Southern Vectis routes 5, 8, and 9 will face delays too. The bus company advises travellers to allow extra time for journeys and connections.

Commuters and Councillors Speak Out

Frustrated commuters are questioning why essential works can’t be done overnight or staggered. “Why close two key routes from the East side of the Island at the same time?” one driver asked. Another said their daily commute had turned into a nightmare.

“It’s going to be rather chaotic,” a local Isle of Wight councillor admitted. “But the work is necessary to keep everyone safe.”

Island Roads has been contacted for comment. Works are set to wrap up by 21st May — but for now, motorists should brace themselves for some serious traffic headaches.
