Jonathan Smith Named London’s New Fire Commissioner
Jonathan Smith has taken the reins as London’s Fire Commissioner, stepping into the shoes of Andy Roe, who retired earlier this year. Smith now leads one of the world’s busiest fire and rescue services, the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
From Norfolk Firefighter to London’s Top Fire Chief
Smith’s fire service career began in 2000 with Norfolk Fire and Rescue. Over two decades, he climbed the ranks, gaining a reputation for hands-on expertise and sharp leadership.
Before his top job, Smith served as Deputy Commissioner and Director of Operational Preparedness and Response for LFB. He was the senior commander during major incidents and led the Brigade’s strategic response to national events like the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III.
“Andy Roe’s leadership brought vital reforms. I’m committed to building on this strong foundation. The Brigade isn’t complacent – we are ready to protect London’s communities,” said Commissioner Smith.
Andy Roe Moves to Building Safety Reform
Andy Roe, who spent over 20 years with the London Fire Brigade, has taken up a new role heading a government-backed body under the Ministry of Housing. His focus: building safety reform.
Roe is credited with transforming the Brigade’s culture and operations after the Grenfell Tower tragedy. He earned praise for his calm, effective leadership during numerous complex incidents, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in fire and rescue services.
