A routine Monday evening commute turned into a chaotic nightmare when a faulty Jubilee line train broke down near Waterloo, leaving passengers trapped underground for hours before being evacuated onto the tracks.
Passengers Trapped for Hours in Stifling Carriage
Commuters faced a nightmare ordeal during the evening rush hour as the faulty train ground to a halt. One woman revealed she was stuck inside a packed carriage for three hours in sweltering conditions, with lights cutting out and no way to escape.
She vented on social media: “Can I get compensation for life for this PTSD event?”
Another passenger, J Soeiro Goncalves, described the aftermath: “Two hours later we were let out and walked back – on the tracks – assisted by staff and Transport Police – to Waterloo Station. Everyone was calm and very civilised.”
Many reported being “in pitch black for over an hour, sweating,” with some close to a panic attack.
Dramatic Evacuation Onto Tracks
Video footage shows commuters being led off the stranded train and onto the tracks in tense, unusual scenes rarely seen in London’s Underground. Staff and British Transport Police guided the passengers through dark service tunnels back to Waterloo station, ensuring none were left behind.
TfL Issues Apology Amid Ongoing Chaos
Transport for London (TfL) apologised for the chaos. A spokesperson said:
“We apologise to Jubilee line customers who were held on a faulty train yesterday evening and to those customers whose journeys were disrupted by this incident, which involved the incident train and an additional faulty train. Engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore a good service on the line.”
Despite efforts, as of Tuesday afternoon, the Jubilee line is still suffering severe delays, with thousands of commuters affected.
Tube Trouble Ahead: Strike Looms
This disruption hits just days before a planned RMT strike threatens to cripple Tube services nationwide from 7 to 11 September unless an agreement is reached, potentially causing more misery for London’s daily travellers.
