New HQ and Bold Campaign Shine Spotlight on Childhood Arthritis
Juvenile Arthritis Research, a Tonbridge-based charity, is shaking up how we see juvenile arthritis. They’ve just moved into fresh new premises and launched a vibrant awareness campaign to fight ignorance around this little-known but serious condition.
What is Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune disease that affects kids of any age. Richard Beesley set up the charity five years ago after seeing the impact of JIA within his own family. Driven by a personal mission, he’s teamed up with parents, doctors, teachers, and schools to create vital support resources for families dealing with a JIA diagnosis.
Why Awareness is Crucial
- Many don’t realise childhood arthritis exists, which means diagnosis often comes too late.
- Untreated JIA can cause permanent joint damage and serious eye problems like uveitis.
- Richard highlights that delays aren’t because of NHS waiting lists, but due to a lack of awareness among families, schools, and even health professionals.
The charity’s new “ThinkJIA” campaign urges everyone to spot the signs early — any joint pain lasting more than six weeks needs specialist attention. JIA isn’t always obvious in blood tests or X-rays, so speedy referrals to paediatric rheumatologists and eye specialists are vital.
Fresh Base, New Energy in Tonbridge
Juvenile Arthritis Research has relocated to the old SCI gym on Tonbridge’s industrial estate. The move has been warmly welcomed by locals, with bold window displays featuring local children and families spreading messages of hope and strength.
Richard says the new digs have supercharged the charity’s efforts. “It lets us support more families both locally and across the UK,” he says. As a volunteer-run outfit, they’re keen to team up with businesses or donors who can offer skills, services, or funding.
“Our new home isn’t just a building,” Richard adds. “It’s a beacon for raising awareness and showing those affected they’re not alone.”
