Traffic came to a grinding halt in both directions on the M2 Medway Viaduct today after police stepped in over concerns for a person’s welfare. The incident, which sparked miles of tailbacks, unfolded just before midday between Junction 2 (Sundridge Hill) and Junction 3 (Chatham).
Two-Mile Queues as Police Respond
At the height of the drama, motorists faced two-mile-long queues. National Highways confirmed the road closure, which began shortly before 12 pm, sparked by police intervention over worries about an individual’s well-being near the coastbound carriageway at Strood.
By 12:29pm, Traffic was being released and the roadway was reopening. The M2 Medway Viaduct fully reopened by 12:30pm, with traffic steadily easing.
Police Update: Person Now Safe
“Kent Police was called at 11.54am on Wednesday 1 April 2026 to concerns for the welfare of a person near the M2 coastbound carriageway near Strood. Officers are in attendance and the person is safely with them,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
