Starmer Slams £6,000 in Gifts Back After Hospitality Furore
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has coughed up over £6,000 in repayments after backlash over accepting lavish gifts and hospitality while in office. The repayments cover tickets to six Taylor Swift concerts, four race meetings, and a swanky clothing rental for his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer.
Gifts Under the Microscope Amid Calls to ‘Clean Up’ Politics
This move comes hot on the heels of mounting criticism targeting Sir Keir and his Cabinet, who vowed to “clean up” British politics but were caught accepting tens of thousands in freebies from wealthy donors.
On Wednesday, a Downing Street spokesperson announced the repayments and revealed a new crackdown on ministers’ hospitality rules, aiming for full transparency. “The Prime Minister has commissioned a new set of principles on gifts and hospitality to be published as part of the updated ministerial code,” the spokesperson said.
Tickets, Clothes & More: The Full List Of Repayments
- £2,800 for four Taylor Swift tickets from Universal Music Group
- £598 for two Football Association tickets
- £1,939 for four tickets to Doncaster Races from Arena Racing Corporation
- £839 for a clothing rental from designer Edeline Lee, plus a one-hour hair and makeup session for Lady Starmer
Sir Keir defended the repayments, saying: “We came in as a government of change… Until now, politicians have used their best individual judgment on a case-by-case basis. I think we need some principles of general application. So, I took the position that until the principles are in place, it was right for me to make those repayments.”
Scrutiny Deepens As Other Donations Spark More Questions
Starmer’s acceptance of an additional £6,134 in “clothing and personal support” for his wife from Labour peer Lord Waheed Alli has sparked fresh scrutiny, especially as Lord Alli faces a probe by Parliament’s standards watchdog over alleged non-registration of interests.
Meanwhile, hospitality from football clubs continues to raise eyebrows. Starmer took £920 worth of Tottenham Hotspur tickets for the North London derby and £1,000 from Arsenal FC in August. He defended this, citing tight security measures preventing him from sitting in the stands free of charge.
Conservatives Hit Out at Transparency Claims
The Conservatives accused Starmer of only being “transparent when his back’s against the wall.” A party spokesperson said: “This announcement today poses more questions than it answers.” They also questioned why Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner hadn’t followed suit with similar repayments – Rayner declared £836 for a DJ booth spot at Ibiza’s Hi nightclub over the summer.
MPs’ Hospitality & Donations Exposed
- Foreign Secretary David Lammy accepted £2,300 in Tottenham Hotspur hospitality to watch the North London derby
- Labour MP Liam Conlon took £1,660 worth of Taylor Swift tickets at Wembley from the Premier League
- Conservative leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick declared £134,376.51 in donations – facing fiery questions over a £75,000 donation from a struggling company with no employees or profit
The political row highlights urgent demands for clearer, tougher rules on ministerial gifts and donations. Sir Keir’s repayments and new ethical code show he’s feeling the heat – but will it be enough to restore public trust?
