Kent Fire Service Battles Youth Arson with Compassion
When reports of youngsters playing with fire land on Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) desk, a specialist team jumps into action. They don’t just put out fires – they aim to stop them before they start by mentoring the kids and their families through tough times.
Firesetters Team: More Than Just Firefighters
Whether young people have already started setting fires or just show signs of wanting to, KFRS’s firesetters team steps in to understand their reasons, teach them the serious dangers, and keep them safe.
Anna, Firesetters Supervisor, says: “We spend a lot of time getting to know our young people, trying to understand what’s driven them to this behaviour. Then we tailor our approach to suit each individual. We don’t stop until they fully grasp the risks of firesetting and are no longer a danger to themselves or others.”
She added, “At first, we may not get why they’re acting out, but coming in with compassion and an open mind helps us support them better. Creating a safe, judgement-free space lets them open up and makes all the difference.”
How the Intervention Works
- Referrals come from professionals or concerned families.
- The team builds trust with the young person and their family.
- Sessions and mentoring are tailored and held at home, school, or another safe spot.
Anna explains: “We never approach these kids negatively. Our priority is safety and support, not punishment. It’s a compassionate, judgement-free mission.”
She concludes, “I’m proud of my job. It’s incredibly rewarding to see lives turn around.”
