Kent Police Step Up to Protect 40,000 Freshers in Canterbury and Medway
Kent Police have launched a full-on safety blitz as over 40,000 new students flood into Canterbury and Medway for the start of the academic year. Officers are on the ground handing out safety gear and advice to help Freshers enjoy the county without worry.
Freshers Get Safety Boost at Fairs and Hotspots
Since Monday, 16 September, police have been present at Freshers’ Week fairs and popular student venues. They’ve been handing out panic alarms and drink toppers, plus sharing crucial tips on how to stay safe while partying, including the best routes home.
Additional cops will be patrolling Canterbury and Rochester city centres throughout Freshers’ Week, especially over the weekend, to keep an eye on the action and nip trouble in the bud.
Crackdown on Drink and Needle Spiking
The efforts tie in with the national Anti-Spiking Intensification Week. Kent Police are working closely with bar and door staff, as well as students, to raise awareness of spiking risks and teach how to spot and report suspicious activity.
Community Voice Keeps Students in the Loop
Over 150 students in Canterbury have signed up for My Community Voice, a messaging service alerting residents about local policing updates—giving students a direct line to stay informed and safe.
Chief Superintendent Shaun White said: “We want students to have a happy and safe time during their years of study. Our officers have been conducting high-visibility patrols and visiting popular venues to hear concerns and offer our experience. Plain clothes officers are also operating alongside uniformed police to challenge any suspicious behaviour and work with partner agencies to ensure everyone’s safety.”
