Lewes Bonfire Night 2024: Major Road Closures and Train Disruptions Ahead
Tens of thousands are set to descend on Lewes for the famed Bonfire Night celebrations on Tuesday, 5th November 2024. Emergency services and local authorities have slammed the brakes on traffic with extensive road closures and train service changes to keep the event safe and orderly.
Shut Roads and Strict Parking Rules
From 4:45 PM onwards, key roads around Lewes will shut tight. Drivers are urged to park up early and avoid bringing cars into town. Major junctions affected include:
- A27 junction with A277 Brighton Road (Ashcombe Roundabout)
- A275 junction with Offham Road
- C7 Kingston Road junction with C324 Wellgreen Lane
- A26 junction with A2029 Malling Street
- A26 Malling Hill junction with Church Lane
On-street parking restrictions kick in from midday, with towing enforcement for offenders. Residents with permits needing alternative arrangements should ring East Sussex County Council’s parking team on 01273 335500.

Train Stations Closing – Plan Your Journey
Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde, and Southease stations will be closed from 5 PM on the night, reopening the next morning. Trains will not stop at these stations during the event. A new late service will help clear crowds by making final stops at these closed stations. Commuters to London and beyond should book ahead and expect earlier last trains.
Local Fireworks: Stay Safe, Stay Local
The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) urges residents to celebrate at local fireworks displays instead of heading to Lewes. This helps reduce crowding and keeps travel disruption to a minimum. For a list of nearby events, check ESFRS Local Fireworks Events.
These traffic and transport changes are critical to managing one of the UK’s most iconic Bonfire Nights safely. If you’re not attending the event, plan your travel accordingly and expect delays.
