Firefighters Battle Major Blaze at Croydon Tower Block
Six fire engines and around 35 firefighters were scrambled to tackle a fierce fire ripping through the basement of a Croydon tower block late Sunday night.
Flames Rip Through No. 1 Croydon Basement
The fire broke out just after 11pm at No. 1 Croydon—the former NLA Tower, also known as the 50p Building or the Wedding Cake—on Addiscombe Road, right next to East Croydon station. The 24-storey, 269-foot tower, designed by Richard Seifert & Partners and completed in 1970, houses various companies including Atkins, Directline Holidays, HotGen, dotdigital, Natterbox, and Global Resourcing.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
- Fire crews remain at the scene, working to bring the blaze under control.
