Liverpool Fan Killed in Tragic Milan Crash Hours Before Champions League Clash

Fan Fatally Hit on Motorway Near Milan Airport

A Liverpool supporter has died after being struck by an SUV in Milan, mere hours before the Reds’ big Champions League tie against AC Milan. The 51-year-old had just arrived from Manchester and was trying to cross the busy A4 motorway near Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo, Italy, at around 1am on Monday night.

Reports from Italian media Il Corriere della Sera and La Gazzetta dello Sport reveal the fan was heading to a hotel after landing just before midnight. Tragically, he crossed three lanes of traffic before the fatal collision. His passport and a Liverpool match ticket for the game against Milan were found on him at the time.

Witnesses Saw Father and Son Near Scene

Eyewitnesses described seeing the victim with a father and son nearby moments before the accident. Unlike the fan, they didn’t attempt to cross the motorway. Italian police have since identified them and are seeking to question the pair about the incident.

Authorities are probing whether the fan might have been in a “psychophysical altered state,” possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

Match Cast in Shadow as Liverpool Mourns

This heartbreaking incident has overshadowed what should have been a thrilling night at San Siro Stadium. Liverpool and AC Milan are set to face off in their fifth-ever Champions League meeting, famously remembering the 2005 Istanbul final when Liverpool staged a stunning comeback.

Liverpool fans and the wider football community are mourning the loss of one of their own. Milan police continue to investigate the circumstances, while Liverpool prepares for its opening Champions League fixture under a cloud of grief.

Police Appeal for More Witnesses

Italian police are urging anyone who saw the incident or has information to come forward. They are also considering charges against the father and son for failing to assist the victim. The investigation remains open, with authorities focusing on all factors that led to this tragic loss.

This devastating event has added a tragic note to what should have been a night of football celebration as Liverpool aims for a strong start against Serie A giants AC Milan.
