London on High Alert with Festive Counter-Terror Patrols

Police across London are ramping up patrols this Christmas season, including heavy-hitting counter-terrorism squads. Following a recent rise in the UK’s terror threat level—from substantial to severe—officers from the Met, City of London Police, and British Transport Police are stepping up their presence in busy spots.

Armed and unarmed patrols are hitting crowded shopping districts, transport hubs, and Christmas events. These heightened security measures will roll out throughout the festive period to keep Londoners safe.

Spotlight on Project Servator: London’s Anti-Terror Secret Weapon

Specially trained officers are leading “Project Servator” patrols, designed to spot suspicious behaviour and snuff out threats before they happen. While these deployments run year-round, they’re now on full throttle for Christmas and New Year.

Project Servator officers blend uniformed and plain-clothes cops, backed by sniffer dogs, CCTV, ANPR, and sometimes horses. Don’t worry if you spot armed officers or unusual activity—this high-profile operation is all about visibility and community engagement. Officers will be chatting to Londoners and local businesses to encourage vigilance.

“Stay Alert and Safe,” Warns Top Cop

“It’s been two years since we enjoyed London’s festive buzz with a degree of normality,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist. “But after recent terror attacks in Essex and Merseyside, the threat level has gone up. People need to stay sharp and report anything suspicious. London is still safe, so get out and enjoy the festivities—but keep your eyes open and trust your instincts.”

How You Can Help: Spot It, Report It

  • Seen something dodgy? Tell a police officer immediately.
  • Report concerns online at www.gov.uk/ACT.
  • Call the confidential Anti Terrorist Hotline: 0800 789 321.
  • In an emergency, dial 999 without delay.

Last year, the public made around 10,000 reports that helped foil terror plots. One in five reports provided vital intel. The police urge Londoners to be their “extra eyes and ears” this holiday season.
