London Braces for Wild New Year’s Eve as Storm Warnings Sweep UK
City Hall is on high alert, “monitoring the weather” closely ahead of London’s smash-hit New Year’s Eve celebrations. That comes after Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay bash was hit by severe weather – forcing organisers to pull the plug on key events.
Severe Weather Warnings Hit UK
The Met Office has unleashed a series of weather warnings from December 30 through January 1, covering huge swathes of the country:
- Yellow alerts for heavy rain and snow across Scotland, with an amber warning slapped on Inverness for downpours.
- Yellow warnings also cover wind and rain in parts of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
- Stormy gusts of up to 70mph expected on New Year’s Eve, with highs of 75mph blowing in along coasts and hills on New Year’s Day.
Edinburgh’s Hesss Hogmanay Shutdown
Edinburgh has cancelled its headline outdoor festivities, including:
- The Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens on December 30.
- The Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, and iconic midnight fireworks at Edinburgh Castle on New Year’s Eve.
A spokesperson said the decision was driven by “public safety concerns” over high winds and bad weather halting setup. Luckily, all indoor events will carry on as planned.
London’s Fireworks Still Set to Go – But Eyes on the Skies
Despite the meteorological mayhem, the Mayor of London’s flagship New Year’s Eve fireworks display is currently locked in — but City Hall is keeping a weather eye on conditions.
The Met Office warns extreme winds could cause travel havoc, with roads, rail, and flights facing possible delays across England and Northern Ireland.
“Local authorities and organisers are monitoring the weather forecast closely. Public safety remains a top priority,” said a City Hall spokesperson.
Stormy Start to 2025
Expect the wild weather to stick around on New Year’s Day with:
- Strong winds up to 60mph across England and Wales.
- Gale-force gusts hitting 75mph along exposed coastal and hilly areas.
- Persistent rain soaking parts of the UK.
Public Safety Warning
Officials urge everyone to plan ahead, keep tabs on weather updates, and wrap up warm if heading outdoors. Transport delays are forecast, so allow extra time for travel.
Despite the blustery outlook, London’s fireworks organisers remain optimistic for a spectacular show to welcome in 2025.
