Serious Ambulance Crash Shuts M2 Near Gillingham
A nasty collision between an ambulance and a car slammed the M2 near Junction 4 on Friday night, injuring four people and triggering a massive emergency response.
Crash Details and Road Closures
The smash happened at 8.55pm on 29 August, close to Junction 4 (A278 Hoath Way) near Gillingham. kent.police.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Kent Police quickly sealed off Junctions 4 and 5 of the M2 as they and other emergency crews rushed to the scene.
“Kent Police was called at 8.55pm on Friday 29 August to a report that a car had struck an ambulance at the junction of the M2 and the A278 Hoath Way, Gillingham. Officers are currently attending the scene alongside other emergency services. Junctions 4 and 5 of the M2 are currently closed whilst the incident is responded to, and drivers are advised to find alternative routes.”
Ambulance Was Not Carrying Patient
South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) confirmed the ambulance was on its way to a hospital transfer and not carrying a patient when it was hit.
“One of our ambulances was involved in an RTC shortly before 9pm. Two female crew members on board sustained injuries. One was taken to a London hospital and the other to Tunbridge Wells Hospital, both with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two male members of the public from the other vehicle were also taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital for checks. Our thoughts are with all those involved, including those who responded.”
Firefighters Rescue and Secure Crash Scene
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) scrambled four fire engines to the crash site. Crews stabilised vehicles, used lighting and tools to free three people, then handed them over to ambulance staff.
“Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to assist SECAmb following a crash between two vehicles on the M2 near Gillingham. Crews used vehicle stabilisation equipment, lighting and small tools to extricate three people from the vehicles, who were then passed into the care of SECAmb. Crews also worked to make the scene safe. Kent Air Ambulance and Kent Police also attended.”
