M20 motorway shut both ways after lorry erupts in fire

Blaze Sparks Massive Road Closure

The M20 is completely blocked in both directions between Junction 11a (Channel Tunnel) and Junction 11 (Hythe) after a lorry burst into flames early this morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 9am following reports of a heavy goods vehicle on fire on the London-bound carriageway.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes have been closed, causing huge disruption for drivers.

Scenes of Chaos and Smoke Clouds

National Highways shared images showing thick plumes of smoke billowing from the burning lorry as fire crews battled the blaze. Police officers and Highways Traffic Officers remain on scene, managing traffic and assisting with recovery efforts.

Traffic Hell: Delays and Diversions

  • Severe congestion reported, with delays stretching back for miles in both directions.
  • Drivers are being diverted via the A20 (Ashford Road). Motorists should allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes.
  • National Highways advises avoiding the area where possible. Clearance and recovery work is expected to continue throughout the morning.

“We are currently at the scene of a lorry fire between Junctions 11 and 11a of the M20. Both carriageways have been closed to allow emergency crews to safely manage the situation. No injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
