Massive Blaze Erupts at Derelict Cinema in Kingston
A huge fire ripped through a disused cinema site near Gala Bingo on Richmond Road, Kingston upon Thames, this Sunday afternoon. Fire crews scrambled to the scene as thick smoke billowed across the area, causing chaos and road closures.
25 Fire Engines and 150 Firefighters Battle the Flames
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) unleashed a massive response, deploying 25 fire engines and two aerial ladders to tackle the inferno. Firefighters, donned in full breathing apparatus, used main jets and ladders to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Eyewitnesses watched in shock as thick plumes of smoke filled the sky. Emergency services swiftly cordoned off the scene and shut down several roads to keep the public safe.
Firefighters Make Steady Progress – No Injuries Reported
The LFB confirmed crews from multiple boroughs, including Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, and Richmond, responded due to the scale of the fire. Station Commander Will Thompson said:
“Crews are making steady progress in tackling the fire. There are road closures in place, and we urge people to avoid the area to help reduce disruption. The fire is producing smoke, so we advise local residents to keep their windows and doors closed.”
He added that two 32-metre turntable ladders are being used as observation towers, giving commanders a bird’s eye view to coordinate the firefight. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Local Residents Voice Concern Over Derelict Site
The old cinema, which has stood abandoned for years, has been a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and fire risks, sparking long-running calls for redevelopment or enhanced security. Today’s blaze only adds fuel to fears surrounding the neglected site.
Authorities Urge Public to Steer Clear
Officials have warned locals to avoid the Richmond Road area while crews continue their work. Traffic disruptions remain in place, with further updates expected on road conditions and the fire investigation as the situation develops.
