Major Blaze Tears Through Hackney Synagogue
Emergency services are battling a fierce fire at Hackney Synagogue on Belize Terrace this morning. Ten fire engines and dozens of firefighters are on the scene, joined by London Ambulance and the Police.
Flames Rip Through Three-Storey Building
Witnesses reported thick flames pouring from the new synagogue. The fire reportedly started in the towel room and quickly spread across all three floors. Firefighters rushed to save precious Torah scrolls, removing them amid the chaos.
London Fire Service confirmed 15 engines and around 95 firefighters and officers were called out. The blaze severely damaged half the basement and ground floor, plus part of the first floor of the building.
Firefighters Battle Dangerous Conditions
Station Manager Nicola Lown said the ground floor partially collapsed into the basement, creating hazardous conditions. “Two fire rescue units used specialist equipment to shore up the floor,” she explained. “This allowed crews to wear breathing apparatus and reach the fire in the basement safely.”
The fire was reported just before midnight and was brought under control by 6.53am.
No Injuries Reported, Investigation Underway
Fire crews from across north London—including Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton, Hornsey, and Holloway—responded to the emergency. Luckily, no injuries have been reported.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
