Massive Blaze Hits Penge Flat – 70 Firefighters Battle Flames
In the early hours of Monday 29th January 2024, a third-floor flat in a three-storey block on Orchard Grove, Penge, was swallowed by flames. The London Fire Brigade launched a huge response, sending ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters to the scene.
One Woman Hospitalised as Residents Evacuate
Thanks to quick thinking, at least 15 people escaped the burning building before firefighters arrived. One woman suffered smoke inhalation and was rushed to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
Firefighters Fight Fire Into Dawn
Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 4.07am, working relentlessly with ten fire engines. A 32-metre turntable ladder was used as a lookout, while drone teams gave aerial views to help coordinate the effort. Crews stayed on-site for hours, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished and dampening down hotspots.
Investigation Underway as Roads Remain Closed
Authorities have urged the public to avoid Orchard Grove and nearby Thicket Road until it’s safe. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, stressing the ongoing importance of fire safety and preparedness.
