Ramadan Warning: Check Before You Donate!
As British Muslims embrace Ramadan, generosity soars. But with recent disasters in Turkey and Syria, plus the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, regulators are urging donors to be vigilant. They warn against fake charity scams that prey on kindness during this holy month.
Don’t Let Scammers Steal Your Goodwill
Most charity appeals are genuine. Yet fraudsters exploit big giving seasons with fake websites and bogus emails pretending to be trusted charities. Social media is flooded with fake appeals for disaster victims in Turkey and Syria. To protect your donations, always:
- Check the charity’s name and registration number at 123.
- Face-to-face collectors should have a licence from your Local Authority or the Metropolitan Police if in London.
If you spot a suspicious appeal, report it immediately to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online.
Charity Chiefs Warn: Stay Sharp This Ramadan
Helen Stephenson, CEO of the Charity Commission, said: “British Muslims are immensely generous during Ramadan. It’s vital your kindness reaches those in desperate need – whether at home, or in countries like Turkey and Syria. Follow a few simple checks to give safely and confidently.”
Gerald Oppenheim, CEO of the Fundraising Regulator, added: “The British Muslim community’s generosity powers vital charity work globally. By doing simple checks, you ensure your money goes where it’s needed most.”
Fadi Itani, CEO of the Muslim Charities Forum, warned: “Giving is a spiritual act in Islam, but goodwill can be exploited. Always give smart and safe. Donate only to registered charities with a local presence and secure donation methods – so your funds truly save lives.”
