Man Dies in Police Custody After Arrest for Assault and Drug Charges
A 44-year-old man has died in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of assault and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. Thames Valley Police has immediately referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
Arrest and Hospital Visit
Police responded to an incident in Reading at 1.30pm on Saturday, April 1, arresting the man. Concerns over his welfare led officers to take him to Royal Berkshire Hospital. He was later discharged and returned to the police station that evening.
Death in Custody
At around 4am the next day, Sunday, April 2, the man was found unresponsive in his cell. Officers and ambulance crews rushed to provide medical aid before rushing him back to the hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at 5am.
Investigation Underway
IPCC Associate Commissioner Guido Liguori said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man, and those affected by his death. Our investigators have already met family members and will continue to support them throughout the investigation.”
“We are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death.”
A post-mortem was due to take place on Monday, April 3 as police and the IPCC launch a full investigation. Detective Chief Superintendent Tim De Meyer confirmed the referral to the IPCC is to ensure transparency and accountability in this tragic case.
