These pint-sized hippos are endangered, with fewer than 3,000 left in the wild, according to the IUCN Red List. The species’ survival is hanging by a thread.
Hope for Future Calves
The youngster has joined Marwell as part of a European ex-situ breeding programme (EEP). Staff are optimistic she and resident hippo Oliver will soon welcome calves, boosting this precious population.
