Heavy Snow Set to Blanket South London on Monday

The Met Office and BBC Weather have warned of heavy snowfall hitting parts of London on Monday, January 8, 2024. South London is in for a proper winter wonderland, with Dulwich, Eltham, and areas along the A205 expected to see the thickest snow. The chill will turn the city’s streets frosty, creating stunning scenes but tricky travel conditions.

Where and When Will the Snow Fall?

  • Snow will mainly fall between 10am and 11am, hitting areas like Dulwich and Eltham hardest.
  • Sanderstead and Kenley will face longer spells of snow, from 9am through to 7pm.
  • South Croydon could see the heaviest snowfall in the capital, with temperatures plunging to a bone-chilling -5 to -6°C.

Forecasters say snow will lessen further north, with the River Thames acting as a natural divider. Eastwards in Erith, moderate snow showers will hit around mid-morning and again in the evening between 5pm and 8pm.

Light Flurries and Icy Warnings on the Edges

  • Sutton and Morden on the edges will see lighter snow flurries, mostly mid-morning and afternoon.
  • Woolwich will get intermittent snowfall between 10am-11am and later showers at 5pm, mixed with rain.
  • Eltham faces a solid few hours of snow from late morning to early afternoon, extending into the evening.

The Met Office has slapped a yellow warning for ice across affected areas. They urge everyone to take extra care on the roads, leave additional travel time, and stick to main routes where possible.

How Much Snow Will Fall?

Despite the heavy snow forecasts, AccuWeather says there’s a 69% chance the snowfall will leave “little to no accumulation,” with snowfall rates at about 0.1cm per hour. Still, that won’t stop freezing conditions making travel risky.

Prepare for the Chill, London!

With temperatures hovering around zero and wind chills driving it below -5°C, Londoners should wrap up and stay updated on the latest forecasts. Monday’s snowstorm promises stunning sights but a cold challenge for commuters and residents alike.
