UK Braces for More Rain and Unsettled Weather

Brits should keep those brollies close – the UK is set to face a few more days of soggy, unsettled weather. Rain will continue to sweep across the country, driven by low-pressure systems lurking northwest of the island.

Showers, Hail and Thunderstorms on the Horizon

While these rain showers won’t be as intense as recent downpours, some could still pack a punch. Southern England should watch out for possible hail and thunderstorms as wet weather marches in from the west.

Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Torrential Rain

Thursday starts dry for many parts of England, but a band of heavy rain will move northeast across southern and eastern regions. The Met Office has slapped a yellow National Severe Weather Warning on the country from midday Thursday through to early Friday morning.

“The track of the heaviest rain remains uncertain, but there is a chance of 20 to 30 mm falling in 6 to 9 hours, with some spots seeing up to 40-50 mm,” warns Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert. “Most rain will hit already saturated ground, raising flood risks.”

Colder, Drier Weather Set to Follow

There’s a silver lining – after this soggy spell, rain showers are expected to ease. High pressure is likely to take hold over or near the UK, bringing colder, drier, and more settled conditions in the days ahead.

Temperatures will drop next week, with frost overnight and fog potential due to moisture and calm conditions. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert for all of England from 9am January 6 to noon January 9, warning of below-average temperatures and frosty nights on already wet ground.
