Tragic Crash Claims Life of Valued Motorcyclist Amid Cost of Living Struggles
Matthew Woodward, 33, has died in a shocking early-morning crash on the A48 in the Vale of Glamorgan last week. The collision between his motorbike and a car also claimed the life of the other driver. Friends reveal Matthew had recently sold his car due to the relentless cost of living crisis.
Early Morning Horror on A48
The smash happened at around 4.25am last Friday between Bonvilston and Cowbridge. Both victims remain unidentified as police continue their investigation. South Wales Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, expressing condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
Friends Rally to Support Family
Close pals Oscar Jenkins and Ryan Smith, who have known Matthew—nicknamed “Woody”—for two decades, have launched a GoFundMe to help his fiancée Lauren Goodman and immediate family with funeral costs. Originally from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Matthew had moved to Barry and worked as an HGV driver.
Struggling Against Rising Costs
Facing financial pressure, Matthew sold his car and used his motorbike for summer commutes. Friends recall how he recently spoke candidly about the pinch of rising expenses and even considered retraining as a train driver for better pay. Above all, he was devoted to supporting his young child and family.
A Life Remembered
Matthew’s mates remember him as a friendly, approachable man who quickly connected with everyone he met. His love for motorsport, especially Formula 1, was well known. His tragic death has left a deep mark on those who knew him—even casual acquaintances were moved by his kindness.
“He was truly one of a kind, and we hope to keep his memory alive by promoting road safety and celebrating the amazing person he was,” said a friend. “Matthew would’ve wanted his daughter to grow up knowing her dad made a positive difference.”
