Man Charged After Series of Car Fires Rock Canterbury Streets

Car Ablaze Sparks Police Investigation

Kent Police rushed to Church Street just after 1am on Thursday 22 July 2021 after reports of a car on fire. The blaze triggered a full investigation into a string of vehicle fires across Canterbury.

Suspect in Custody

Richard Barham, 37, formerly of Becket Avenue, Canterbury, has been charged with arson linked to the incident. He appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Friday 23 July and was remanded in custody. Barham is set to face Canterbury Crown Court on a date yet to be confirmed.

Multiple Cars Damaged in Incident

On that same night, eight other cars were damaged across Cross Street, Davidson Road, and Bishops Way. Thankfully, Kent Fire and Rescue Service extinguished all fires with no injuries reported.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Investigations are ongoing. Kent Police urge anyone who saw what happened or has CCTV or dashcam footage to call 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/129500/21. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555111 or via their online form.
