M25 Shutdown Warning: Five-Mile Closure Sparks Chaos

Drivers beware! A massive five-mile stretch of the M25 in Surrey will shut down this weekend, and National Highways is urging motorists to ignore satnavs and stick to official diversion routes.

M25 to Close from Friday Night Until Monday Morning

The Government-owned National Highways announced the motorway closure between junctions 10 and 11 from 9pm Friday until 6am Monday. The shutdown is to allow for a bridge demolition and new gantry installation — crucial work on one of the UK’s busiest motorway sections.

The closure is expected to add up to an hour to journeys for those following official diversions on A-roads.

Don’t Get Tricked by Satnavs — Follow Official Diversions

National Highways bosses warned that many drivers might try to dodge traffic by using minor local roads — risking severe congestion and chaos in nearby areas.

“Stick on the prescribed diversion route. It’s going to be more suitable for your journey,” said Jonathan Wade, project lead at National Highways.

Senior project manager Daniel Kittredge backed this up, stressing that ignoring official routes could cause extra problems for residents in local neighbourhoods.

Big Plans Ahead: M25 Junction 10 Upgrade

This closure forms part of a huge project due to finish in summer 2025, aiming to revamp the hazardous Junction 10 interchange. The upgrade will add lanes and improve access on and off the M25.

Motorists should also expect additional daytime closures until September as work progresses.

National Highways strongly urges all drivers to plan journeys carefully and stick to official diversions to keep roads safe and disruption to a minimum.
