New Year’s Eve chaos is looming for London commuters as engineers shut key routes on Southeastern, Thameslink, London Overground, and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Brace yourself for travel headaches and unexpected changes across the capital.

Southeastern Slammed by Engineering Works

Southeastern will run a Saturday timetable on December 31, with some extra late-night trains after midnight from London’s main terminals. But beware—the disruption is massive:

  • No Southeastern trains to or from London Victoria all day.
  • Brixton station closed completely.
  • Waterloo East shuts early at 11:45pm.
  • No trains between London and Beckenham Junction via Herne Hill.
  • Off-peak fares apply all day (Travelcards and London zone journeys are exempt).

Replacement Buses and Route Tweaks

  • Buses run between Denmark Hill and Beckenham Junction, stopping at all stations from Herne Hill onwards.
  • Stations served only by replacement buses: West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Penge East, Kent House.
  • Train routes altered: Ramsgate/Dover line departs London Cannon Street, skipping some stops.
  • Changes to maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone East, Bexleyheath, Bromley South, and Hayes lines—with some diversions and cancelled stops.

Thameslink Faces Major Night Disruptions

Thameslink sticks to a Saturday timetable with extra services but with some huge restrictions late evening and overnight:

  • London Blackfriars station exit-only after 8:30pm.
  • No Thameslink trains call at Blackfriars after 11:30pm; services resume at 2am.
  • Farringdon station closes around 12:30am.
  • No trains between Blackfriars and Bellingham or Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction/Wimbledon.
  • Replacement buses run between London Bridge and Bromley South via Bellingham.
  • Altered services operate between Bellingham and Sevenoaks.

London Overground and DLR Disruptions

London Overground’s Windrush line is shut between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction all New Year’s Eve. But night owls get relief with an all-night service from Highbury & Islington to Crystal Palace and West Croydon.

  • Replacement bus M runs Canada Water to Clapham Junction, stopping at Surrey Quays, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street.
  • Southern trains continue to serve Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, and Battersea Park.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) keeps things moving with a Saturday day service plus all-night trains every 15 minutes to see you into the New Year.

Plan ahead, expect delays, and give yourself plenty of extra travel time this New Year’s Eve!
