Pedestrian Killed After Fire Engine Collision in Royston
A pedestrian has tragically died following a collision with a fire engine in Royston. The crash happened at 8:45pm on Wednesday at the roundabout where York Way meets Old North Road.
Fatal Crash on Royston Roundabout
Police are probing the fatal incident after a fire engine, responding to an emergency call, collided with a pedestrian while negotiating the roundabout. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the pedestrian was sadly pronounced dead on-site.
Another person was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with minor injuries, confirmed East of England Ambulance Service.
Chaos and Road Closures in Royston
The fire engine remains at the scene, causing road closures at the roundabout, Rock Road, and the junction near the Tesco Superstore. Andrew Fowler from nearby Barrington described the aftermath: “There’s a fire engine turned over on the second roundabout. It’s a mass of blue flashing lights including ambulances and another fire engine. That is one hell of a piece of equipment to go over.”
Eyewitnesses Describe Grim Scene
Alec Hill, who lives just yards from the crash site, said: “My daughter and I witnessed the scene as we walked back from Tesco. We were sent away by police due to injuries. It’s clear something serious happened — the fire engine was on its side with around 10 to 15 emergency vehicles attending.”
Emergency Services Respond
“The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust received a call at 8.44pm concerning a road traffic collision in Royston,” a spokesperson said. “We dispatched our hazardous area response team, ambulance crews, and the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity. Sadly, a pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second patient was taken to hospital with minor injuries.”
Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson added: “We are investigating a collision involving a fire engine responding to an emergency call and a pedestrian at the York Way/Old North Road roundabout. The fire engine remains in the road as closures continue.”
