New Digital Tool Slashes Delays for Power of Attorney Decisions
The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) has launched a sleek online tool that lets attorneys contact banks and healthcare providers at lightning speed. This digital upgrade replaces the slow, clunky paper system that held up vital decisions affecting the elderly and vulnerable.
Goodbye Paperwork, Hello Efficiency
Previously, attorneys waiting to act on behalf of loved ones faced weeks of delays. Paper forms had to be sent back and forth, causing frustrating hold-ups. Now, a secure code submitted via the new portal confirms attorney status almost instantly. This speedy verification means quicker decisions about care, money, and property.
What’s a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document letting someone you trust make decisions if you can’t. It often helps older people plan ahead, but anyone can create one at any age. With over 4 million LPAs now registered, demand for quick, efficient tools has never been higher.
Keeping Safeguards Firmly in Place
Despite the tech upgrade, the OPG assures that all safety checks remain. The new system verifies legal rights and powers to ensure the vulnerable stay protected from abuse.
Nick Goodwin, Public Guardian for England and Wales, said: “More people are taking the important step to plan for the future. Our new digital service will help attorneys make effective decisions swiftly, cutting out frustrating paper delays. This is just part of our ongoing effort to improve for the public and our partners.”
Justice Minister Alex Chalk added: “This innovative system will make a real positive difference for those dealing with a difficult process. It’s another example of how technology is transforming the justice system to serve the public better.”
Tested and Trusted by Banks and Agencies
The tool has been road-tested by major players like HSBC UK and the Department for Work and Pensions. HSBC’s Head of Financial Inclusion & Vulnerability, Maxine Pritchard, said:
“We’ve worked closely with the OPG to create a much-improved journey for our customers. The pandemic made digital registration essential. Now we can authenticate Powers of Attorney remotely, vastly improving customer experience and support.”
