Essex Police Deny Busing Counter-Protesters to Epping Demonstration
Essex Police have slammed claims that they transported counter-protesters by police vehicles to a heated protest outside the Bell Hotel in Epping on Thursday 17 July.
Footage Proves Protesters Arrived on Foot
Video from the scene shows counter-protesters arriving on foot, escorted by a police walking cordon. They were quickly confronted by rival demonstrators, prompting officers to step in and separate the groups.
“This is categorically untrue,” said Essex Police in response to online rumours about busing in counter-protesters. “No counter-protesters were brought to the scene via police transport.”
Police on Foot Keeping the Peace
A police spokesperson stressed both sides were exercising their legal right to protest peacefully. Officers stayed on foot to control crowds, prevent violence and keep tensions from boiling over.
“Officers maintained a visible presence around each group, walking alongside them to keep order.”
Police Vans Only Used After Trouble Erupted
While police vans did appear later, Essex Police confirmed these were deployed only after disorder escalated.
The three police carriers were used to safely remove some protesters from the scene to diffuse violence and ease pressure on police resources.
“Footage circulating showing protesters entering police vehicles relates to this later phase for safety purposes,” the statement clarified.
Cracking Down on False Online Claims
The police statement aims to quash growing online speculation about their role in transporting protesters. Officials insist the footage disproves baseless accusations and underlines that all actions taken were lawful, impartial, and focused on preserving public peace.
