Son Arrested in Connection to Murder
Authorities arrested the suspect at the home, believed to be the victim’s own son. Crime scene officers spent Sunday and Monday collecting blood samples and recovering a suspected murder weapon.
Local Community Left Reeling
The victim has been named locally as Mary Steel, a popular former junior school teacher and active member of St John’s Church in Farncombe. She lived in Wey Court for over ten years, moving recently into number 40. Neighbours insist there was never any trouble in the close before.
“It is a terrible and shocking event,” said the church’s Rector, Rev James Rattue. “We are waiting for the circumstances to be made clear.”
Members of the church community have been supporting those affected by the tragedy.
Investigation and Post-Mortem Underway
The man, initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and later taken to hospital, is now held on suspicion of murder. A post-mortem is scheduled for Monday, with formal ID expected after.
Surrey Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward as the grim investigation unfolds.
