Kent Gears Up to Welcome Over 1,600 Ukrainian Refugees
Kent is set to welcome around 1,624 Ukrainians fleeing the war, with 709 local sponsors signed up through the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. The county council is pulling out all the stops to ensure these refugees settle safely and smoothly.
Support Systems Rolled Out Across Kent
- Kent County Council (KCC) is conducting thorough DBS checks on all host families.
- English language courses and educational support for Ukrainian adults and children are in place through Kent Adult Education.
- Primary and secondary school places are ready for Ukrainian children arriving in the area.
- A dedicated helpline (03000 412424) offers information, translation services, and assistance for residents and refugees alike.
KCC Leader Roger Gough said: “The council and partners are united in welcoming refugees and supporting generous residents offering them a safe home.”
Dover Launches 24-Hour Welcome Centre
Dover District Council has opened Victory House as a welcome centre for the first Ukrainian arrivals through the port. The centre offers immediate humanitarian aid, refreshments, welfare support, and help with onward travel.
Dover’s council leader Trevor Bartlett commented: “It’s heart-warming to greet these families and support their UK resettlement. Our volunteers and the Dover Outreach Centre have worked fast to create a warm Welcome Point.”
Fire Safety and Community Care
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is stepping up with free home fire safety visits for host families. These visits include fitting fire and carbon monoxide alarms and fire safety advice. Hosts can book a visit by calling 0800 923 7000 or visiting the 123.
