Channel Invasion: 882 Migrants Hit UK Shores in Single Day
A staggering 882 migrants made it across the English Channel on Tuesday, marking the biggest single-day arrival surge this year. The Home Office revealed that 15 small boats were spotted, each carrying around 59 people on average.
2024 Channel Crossings Surge Amid Rising Migrant Numbers
This spike is notable — only twice before this year has the UK seen such a rush, last in September 2023. So far in 2024, over 12,300 migrants have landed, an 18% jump from last year’s total of 10,472 at the same point. It’s also 5% higher than arrivals recorded by this date in 2022.
Channel Crossings Drop in 2023, but Pressure Mounts Ahead of Election
After peaking at a record 45,774 crossings in 2022, migrant arrivals dipped by 36% in 2023 to 29,437. Yet, with over 2,000 arrivals since the general election was called on May 22, immigration remains a hot-button issue as the campaign heats up.
Government Silent on Targets Amid Channel Crisis
Despite pledges to tackle the influx of small boat crossings, the government has yet to set clear goals. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has overseen nearly 50,000 crossings since taking office in October 2022, has avoided specifying an acceptable number. The Channel crisis shows no sign of slowing, keeping immigration centre stage in UK politics.
