Red Funnel CEO Apologises as Ferry Chaos Hits Southampton to Isle of Wight Route

Red Funnel boss Fran Collins has apologised after a wave of travel chaos left passengers stranded between Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Ferry services ground to a halt as key vessels went out of action, sparking huge delays and frustration.

Ferry Fleet Failures Spark Major Disruptions

Collins admitted the disruption fell far short of the company’s usual standards. “We know how frustrating this has been for our customers,” she said, promising that Red Funnel’s teams have been working round the clock to fix the problems and support those hit by the chaos.

The trouble started when both Red Jets were sidelined, the Red Falcon battled engine trouble, and the Red Eagle suffered door faults. For much of the disruption, the fleet was down to just the Red Osprey.

Compensation for Stranded Passengers

  • Vehicle ferry passengers with pre-booked tickets will get vouchers recognising the disruption.
  • High-speed service users, including season ticket holders, will receive extensions on their tickets.
  • Those with specific dated tickets should contact customer service for personalised help.

Travelers delayed for long periods were also handed vouchers for hot and cold drinks by Red Funnel staff on the ground.

Services Partially Restored – Alternatives Offered

Collins confirmed the vehicle ferry service is now running to schedule with 12 crossings daily. However, the Red Jet service remains suspended for the moment. An alternative with a longer crossing time is arranged for Monday, March 18.

Meanwhile, Red Funnel tickets will be accepted by Hovertravel and Hoverbus on their Ryde to Southsea routes to ease passenger frustration until the Red Jet sails again.

“We thank our customers for their patience as we work swiftly and safely to return to normal service,” said Collins. “We sincerely apologise for the disruption to your travel plans.”
