Christmas Day Riot Erupts at HM Prison Cardiff
Chaos broke out at HM Prison Cardiff on Christmas Day, just after 10am, sparking reports of disorder at the Knox Road Estate facility. The prison, housing 820 inmates, saw four prisoners barricade themselves inside a single cell in protest over being moved from Birmingham. Authorities rushed to contain the situation, which ended after around 40 minutes with no injuries reported.
Prisoners Protest Transfer from Birmingham
The disturbance began soon after four inmates, recently transferred from HMP Birmingham following last week’s riot, locked themselves inside a cell. They reportedly barricaded the door in refusal of their relocation. Prison staff quickly mounted a response, supported by two Tornado teams from Cardiff and the nearby Usk prison, specialising in cell extractions. After tense negotiations, the prisoners surrendered.
Calm Restored – No Injuries Reported
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson downplayed the incident as “relatively minor,” confirming no prisoners or staff were hurt. They said:
“On 25 December, prison staff swiftly resolved an isolated incident on one wing at HMP Cardiff. No staff or prisoners were injured. The incident began at 10am and was successfully brought to an end within 40 minutes with all prisoners returning to their cells.”
The MOJ added a warning to inmates causing trouble:
“We do not tolerate this behaviour. Prisoners who behave in this way will be punished and could spend significantly longer behind bars.”
Inside HM Prison Cardiff
The prison offers full-time employment in workshops, training courses, and runs a resettlement unit with programmes aimed at reducing reoffending. A detoxification unit supports short-term prisoners preparing for release.
Family Concerns and Social Media Reaction
Relatives of inmates expressed alarm over the Christmas morning unrest. Mags Oliver took to social media, bluntly commenting: “Prisoners going nuts.”
