Christmas Chaos at Cardiff Prison: Four Inmates Barricade Themselves in Cell
Disorder erupted at HM Prison Cardiff just after 10am on Christmas Day, sparking alarm on the Knox Road Estate in the Welsh capital.
Minor Riot Sparks Lockdown
The prison, which holds around 820 inmates, faced an unusual disturbance when four prisoners barricaded themselves inside a cell. The protest was reportedly sparked by their transfer from Birmingham following last week’s riot there.
Prison staff quickly contained the unrest, and the inmates surrendered within 40 minutes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
Reinforcements Called In
Two Tornado tactical teams, from Cardiff and neighbouring HMP Usk, were deployed to assist in extracting the four prisoners transferred from Birmingham. The rapid response helped keep the situation under control.
Cardiff Prison’s Regime and Aftermath
- HMP Cardiff offers full-time education, prison workshops, and training courses.
- A resettlement unit provides programmes targeting offending behaviour and support for prisoners approaching release.
- There is also a detoxification unit holding short-term inmates prepping for freedom.
Official Response and Family Reactions
Relatives were quick to voice concerns on social media. Mags Oliver wrote: “Prisoners going nuts.”
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson described the event as “a relatively minor incident.” They said:
“On 25 December, prison staff swiftly resolved an isolated incident on one wing at HMP Cardiff. No staff or prisoners were injured. The incident began at 10am and was successfully brought to an end within 40 minutes with all prisoners returning to their cells.
We do not tolerate this behaviour. Prisoners who act in this way will be punished and could face significantly longer sentences.”
