Leeds on Edge: Harehills Erupts in Violent Riots
Leeds shattered into chaos last night as violent riots broke out in the Harehills area. A bus was set ablaze and a police car flipped over amid the mayhem that saw hundreds flood the streets, forcing riot police to scramble to the scene.
Chaos Sparks After Disturbance Involving Children and Agency Workers
The trouble kicked off around 5pm on Luxor Street when officers responded to what began as a disturbance involving agency workers and children. West Yorkshire Police moved to remove the vulnerable from harm, but the situation quickly spiralled out of control.
- Vehicles, including a bus, were engulfed in flames.
- A police car was overturned during the unrest.
- No injuries have been reported so far, but roads remain closed and barriers block off the hotspot.
High-Profile Leaders Condemn Violence
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper blasted the scenes as “shocking,” expressing horror at attacks targeting both police vehicles and public transport. Local councillor Salma Arif urged residents to stay indoors to avoid the disorder.
“The police say no injuries have been reported but are advising people to avoid the area at the moment if possible,” local MP Richard Burgon added as he returned from Parliament.
Police Battle to Restore Order as Community Held Hostage
West Yorkshire Police confirmed: “More officers were called in as pockets of disorder erupted. Road closures are in place and enquiries continue.”
Images and videos from the scene showed crowds pelting objects, setting fires, and a police drone monitoring the turbulent skies over Harehills. Riot police arrived by 10pm, gradually dispersing the crowds, but tensions remain high.
The local community faces disruption and fear as authorities work to bring calm back to the streets of Leeds.
