Highways Workers Threaten 12-Day Christmas Strike Chaos Across England
Roads Could Grind to a Halt Over Festive Period
PCS union members employed by National Highways have announced a brutal 12-day strike over Christmas and New Year. The staff who design, build, and maintain England’s roads are set to walk out in a staggered series of strikes running from December 16 to January 7.
London and South East Brace for Xmas Travel Disruption
The worst-hit region, London and the South East, will face strikes on December 22, 23, 24, and 25, potentially leaving key highways unmanned during the busiest travel days.
Strike Wave Hits Public Sector amid Pay Row
The industrial action comes amid rising tensions over pay and conditions, following a wave of strikes affecting 124 government departments and public bodies demanding a 10% pay hike, better pensions, job security, and protection from redundancy cuts. The PCS has already launched walkouts involving driving instructors and Rural Payments Agency workers.
“We know our members’ action could inconvenience travellers who plan to visit their relatives over the festive period, but our members have been placed in this situation by a government that won’t listen to its own workforce,” said PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka.
“With the serious cost-of-living crisis, they deserve to be paid properly for the important work they do, keeping our roads running safe and free. The government is in the driving seat here – it’s in a position to stop these strikes by putting money on the table.”
More Strike Dates Expected Across Key Departments
The PCS promises more industrial action announcements in the coming weeks, including strikes in critical areas like the Home Office. Travellers and commuters are warned to prepare for chaos on roads and public services this holiday season.
