A Rolls Royce wedding car burst into flames on London Road in Mitcham, sparking chaos and major traffic jams as stunned onlookers watched thick smoke pour from the luxury vehicle.

Wedding Bliss Goes Up in Smoke

The dramatic fire broke out around midday on Saturday, 18 May, close to Mitcham town centre. Video footage and images shared online showed the Rolls Royce stationary, engulfed in thick smoke while several buses built up behind it.

Transport for London confirmed the bus lane had already been shut for roadworks, making the jam even worse as multiple bus routes were stranded.

Despite the fiery drama, no injuries were reported. Witnesses revealed the bride still made it safely to her wedding, though she was understandably shaken.

Social Media Erupts: ‘Only in Mitcham!’

The blaze quickly made waves online, with social media users sharing shock, humour, and sympathy:

  • Gemma Hawkins said: “The bride made it to her wedding x.”
  • Kevin Mordecai joked: “Another one for Mat Armstrong,” nodding to the YouTuber who rebuilds wrecked cars.
  • Lexee Sardaar quipped: “At least they have a story for the kids – the ‘adventures of the parents’!”

Some speculated whether the blaze was caused by an electric car battery. Witnesses confirmed it was a petrol-powered Rolls Royce.

Fire Brigade Rushes In

London Fire Brigade crews responded swiftly, dousing the flames. The cause remains under investigation, but early signs point to an engine fault.

Firefighters stayed at the scene for about an hour while Transport for London advised commuters to steer clear of the area.

Gridlock Continues on London Road

As of 6pm, London Road is still partially blocked, causing continued delays to bus services around Mitcham. Local authorities are working hard to clear the wreck and reopen the road as quickly as possible.
