Safety Works Start at Kenley Rail Crossing After Schoolboy Jaiden Shehata’s Tragic Death
Urgent Action After Devastating Incident
Network Rail is set to launch crucial safety upgrades this month at the Bourne View pedestrian rail crossing in Kenley. This comes after 11-year-old Jaiden Shehata was fatally struck by a train earlier this year.
Jaiden, a Year 7 pupil at Riddlesdown Collegiate, lost his life on the morning of January 23, 2025. The tragedy happened around 8am at the Bourne View footpath crossing between Whyteleafe and Kenley stations.
Community Outrage Sparks Change
The incident ignited fierce anger in the local community. More than 4,000 people signed a petition demanding the immediate closure of the crossing, branding it “dangerously unsafe.”
While the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) continues its probe, Network Rail confirmed the crossing will close from August 11 to carry out vital safety improvements.
New Safety Measures Announced
The upgrade will include installing Miniature Stop Lights (MSLs) to give pedestrians clear, visible warnings before crossing. The aim is to prevent any repeat of the heartbreaking tragedy that shook the community.
“Jaiden was a bright and much-loved boy,” said a family spokesperson. “We welcome these safety changes but will keep campaigning for lasting reform across all rail crossings.”
Long-Overdue Safety Fix
Local residents view Network Rail’s measures as a overdue response to a preventable disaster. The community hopes these changes will save lives and prevent future heartbreak on the rails.
