Massive Search Underway for Missing Climber Liam Day on Jurassic Coast
A desperate overnight search is ongoing along the Jurassic Coast in Swanage as authorities hunt for missing solo cliff climber Liam Day.
Liam Vanishes After Solo Climb
At 12.24am on Wednesday 15 June 2016, Dorset Police received a welfare report for 26-year-old Liam Day from southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton. Liam failed to return home after a planned day of cliff climbing in the Swanage area.
Dorset Police are leading the operation, joined by HM Coastguard and Dorset Search and Rescue Service. Despite scouring the coast all night, Liam remains missing.
Clues Found Near Durlston Country Park
- Liam’s car was discovered on Durlston Road, close to Durlston Country Park.
- Some of his climbing equipment was found about a mile west of Anvil Point.
His family has been notified and are anxiously awaiting news.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Liam is described as white, 5’9” tall, slim, with ginger hair and blue eyes.
Chief Inspector Bob Acaster said: “Liam told his partner he was going climbing for the day but never returned. We believe he went deep water climbing alone, which means he would have used a rope to lower down the cliffs and climbed back up unsupported. We worry he may have come to harm.
“We urge anyone who was in Swanage yesterday and saw a man climbing the cliffs or in Durlston Road to get in touch with Dorset Police immediately.”
Partner Praises Rescue Efforts
Liam’s long-term partner, Emily Brown, lauded the rescue teams and the public for sharing the appeal.
“I’m heading back to Southampton with my car and Liam’s things. Thanks to everyone for all your kind words and for spreading the word. The Coastguard is still searching tonight, but sadly it seems unlikely Liam will return.”
