Firefighters Battle Blaze at Bermondsey Motorcycle Workshop
Six Engines, 40 Firefighters Rush to Scene
On Sunday, April 9, a fierce fire broke out at a motorcycle workshop on Spa Road, Bermondsey. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters scrambled to extinguish the blaze.
Half of the single-storey workshop was badly damaged. Luckily, no injuries were reported.
Quick Response Stops Fire Spreading
The Brigade’s control room took 18 emergency calls about the fire. Station Commander Mick Palmer praised his team, saying: “Crews worked extremely quickly to extinguish the fire and limit it to the motorcycle workshop. Their hard work prevented the fire from spreading and causing damage to surrounding units.”
Cause Linked to Faulty Lithium Battery
The fire is being treated as accidental. Investigators believe it started due to a lithium battery pack failure while charging a cordless power tool.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned: “It’s incredibly concerning we are continuing to see a rise in incidents involving lithium batteries. Please follow our advice on safe charging and ensure everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.”
Fire Under Control in Under an Hour
The Brigade was called at 7:24pm and had the fire under control by 8:19pm. Fire crews from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Dowgate, Whitechapel, Shadwell, and Deptford stations all attended.
