Sixty firefighters scrambled to tackle a fierce blaze ripping through two homes in Mitcham, South West London, this afternoon.

The fire started in a garden on Cowick Road, fuelled by a flammable liquid, before racing to engulf both properties. Eight fire engines, an aerial ladder, and command units were rushed to the scene.

Despite heroic efforts, strong winds pushed the fire into the roofs of both houses, making containment a tough challenge for crews.

Road Closures Hit Mitcham

Police have shut down Cowick Road and nearby streets, blocking all traffic and pedestrians while firefighters battle the blaze.
