Small House Fire in Gravesend Sparks Quick Fire Brigade Response

A fire broke out at a Gravesend home on Spencer Street Sunday evening, but swift action by Kent Fire and Rescue stopped it spreading.

Firefighters Snuff Out Blaze Fast

At around 7:29 PM, two fire engines arrived on the scene and found a small fire on the house landing. Crews quickly doused the flames with a high-pressure hose reel jet, preventing serious damage.

One Minor Injury as Candle Sparks Fire

One person suffered a minor leg burn and was given first aid by fire crews before being handed over to SECAmb paramedics for further treatment. The blaze was ruled accidental, caused by the careless disposal of a hot candle. The candle ignited some rubbish, which spread to a nearby carpet and started the fire.

Fire Crews Issue Safety Warning

After the incident, fire crews urged the public to take candle safety seriously. They stressed that candles must be fully extinguished and cooled before being discarded. Plus, candles should always be kept well clear of flammable items like curtains, bedding, paper, plants, and clothes to avoid disaster.

“Always ensure candles are completely out and cool before disposing of them,” fire officials advised. “Keep them far from anything that could catch fire.”

This near-miss is a stark reminder to handle candles with care. Following proper fire safety steps can stop tragedies before they start.
