Smoke Alarm Saves Couple from Blaze in Ramsgate
A loud smoke alarm gave two people enough time to escape a kitchen fire at their home in Memel Place, Ramsgate. Two fire engines rushed to the scene, where firefighters in breathing gear quickly tackled the flames with hose reel jets.
Firefighters Halt Spread and Clear Smoke
Crews used a smoke curtain to block the fire from spreading and a high-powered fan to clear out thick smoke. The Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Volunteer Response Team also arrived to support the shaken residents, who were unharmed.
Tumble Dryer to Blame – Firefighters Issue Safety Warning
Investigations suggest the fire started accidentally when a tumble dryer caught fire. Firefighters are urging households to:
- Install working smoke alarms on every floor
- Test smoke detectors weekly
- Regularly clean tumble dryer filters to prevent lint build-up
- Never run dryers overnight or when out
- Only dry appropriate, correctly sized items per manufacturer’s instructions
Following this close call, homeowners are reminded to stay vigilant and practice safe drying habits to avoid similar incidents.
