Sonic Boom Turns Out to Be Gas Tank Explosion in North East London

Tottenham Breakers Yard Rocked by Massive Blast

Residents near Tottenham were left shaken after what sounded like a “sonic boom” ripped through the area. It wasn’t a jet — but a gas tank explosion at a breakers yard on Brantwood Road. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze.

Damage and Evacuations After Fiery Blast

The explosion damaged a timber dividing wall and caused minor harm to nearby properties, forcing evacuations on an adjacent road. The London Ambulance Service took one man to hospital, while another was treated onsite.

Cause Linked to Gas Leak Ignited by Spark

Authorities say the blast was likely triggered by a gas leak from a tank, ignited by an electrical spark or open flame. The fire brigade received the emergency call at 5:15pm and wrapped up the operation by 8:17pm, with crews from Tottenham and Walthamstow fire stations attending.

Residents Take to Twitter Over Shaking Windows

Many locals reported their windows shaking and initially feared they’d heard a sonic boom. Instead, it was the force of the gas explosion that sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
