Rowing Tragedy on Thames: Search Enters Sixth Day
A desperate search is underway for a man in his 60s who went missing after his rowing boat capsized on the River Thames near Sunbury Lock, Surrey. The incident happened on Friday, October 11, when a group from Weybridge Rowing Club set out on the water.
Five Rescued, One Still Missing
Emergency services, including police and rescue teams, rushed to the scene at around 8:50am. They pulled five people to safety, but one man remains unaccounted for. The river’s fast current has hampered efforts, forcing search teams to widen their area.
Surrey Police confirmed they will keep a visible presence near Sunbury Lock throughout the week. A specialist officer is supporting the missing man’s family, whose identity remains private at their request.
Weybridge Rowing Club Devastated
Weybridge Rowing Club expressed deep sorrow in a statement: “We are grateful the other crew members and a member of the public who came to assist are safe. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the friends and families affected.”
The club also thanked the public for their help during the rescue and the many supportive messages from other rowing groups and river users.
